Jeanne's Story

Stained glass, to me, is a creative outlet, a brush with history, an emerging talent, an opportunity to encourage others to create something  beautiful and hopefully, a way to support my family doing something I love.

As a teen I loved theater. I gave to the audience my heart and soul. In turn, they gave me their applause. As a mother of seven I served, taught, entertained and encouraged those amazing little individuals. In turn, they thought of me as their mentor, their leader, their protector, their advocate. Now they are all independent and I am still giving of myself in ways that include opening my heart and sharing what I have learned.
Stained glass is a vehicle of expression. I want to encourage in my students a mindset of life appreciation, cutting away the negative self talk and reaching with enthusiasm into their artist self to build an amazing window to their soul.
When I was just ready to graduate from high school, I had a counselor tell me "Young lady, you just aren't college material." I was crushed. Now I know I was perfect college material. Why? Because I wanted to go.
Since then I have been consistently learning and growing in so many ways. My yearly goal is to read at least 50 books, make more windows than I did the previous year, learn more about business by attending seminars and classes, be in 10 gallery shows, launch a new book and teach at least 100 students to love creating glass art. We are all college material, gallery worthy or anything else we decide to be.
When I was little I loved living on a farm and roaming the Colorado fields near our home.I thought that was the perfect time of life. Then when I was a youth I performed in community plays, school acting contests and state wide competitions in theater and track. I knew that was the best time of life. When I became a new mother and spent every moment surrounded by my family, I thought no other time of life could be closer to heaven. Now, I love this time of my life, not because it's better, but because it's now.
A stained glass window illuminates the artist's design with the assistance of light. Our experiences illuminate our lives with the assistance of love.

David's Story

In first grade, I came home with my first report card. My Mother was stunned that her son had failed reading! And so began my odyssey as a reader. Mom signed me up for the Easy Reader book club and had me read to her every night as she washed the dishes. Then I began to branch out, reading harder books with more complex stories, I read many books.

Readers often become writers, and that's what happened to me. My sister and I tried to write a newspaper when I was in fourth grade and she was in second. With no sales and the readership of our less enthusiastic parents, it didn't last long, but the desire was there.

In high school I began to dream first of college and film school, but then of being a writer. I wrote over 120 poems for my high school literary magazine, all were accepted, then they had me choose the 15 I liked most to be published.

I wrote a small book of poetry and sold some copies door to door. It was about the writing. I didn't know how to market myself, but I loved the creativity of the written word. Later in life I began writing fiction and went so far as to self publish a science fiction novel. https://amzn.to/3TIdrr1 Others are at various stages of completion.

As life lead me into drafting and engineering jobs, I found several opportunities to work as a technical writer and illustrator. But the big break that I found was that I needed content for my stained glass website. That has been a wealth of practice and experience as I've written a monthly newsletter (now weekly) and answered peoples questions as an expert on "I How" and "AllExperts".

In high school, as I mentioned that I'd like to be an author, every single teacher said, "Oh you don't want to do that!" Every single one. No voice of encouragement at all!

I sure am lucky to have found a chance to do what I love (writing about stained glass, filming videos about stained glass and helping Jeanne in promoting stained glass)

How Safe Is It?
We use solder irons that heat up to 400 degrees so if you touch them it's dangerous (no one has been hurt or seriously injured in our  [40] years of doing stained glass)
We do use flux, which is a light acid in the soldering process, but lemon juice is also a light acid. We have a small fan that sucks the acid fumes through a charcoal filter to be on the safe side. When we solder in a star class, we only do so for 15 to 20 minutes so "exposure" is minimal. Jeanne and I have been doing stained glass nearly everyday for 35 years and have had no health problems.
Stained glass is put together with solder that contains lead so you should wash your hands well after completion, we have a heavy metal cleaning soap in the studio, but you can use Dawn dish washing liquid, wash, rinse and repeat to be safe.

Sharing Stained Glass
We love Stained Glass and a big part of that is because of the friends and relationships that we develop.

We are friends with some of the first students we had when moving to Utah and meet with them every year around the holidays.

Jeanne has taught hundreds of students in many classes and cherishes the many friends she's met along the way.

David enjoys our on-line relationships with folks who write comments on the videos we publish.

All and all, it's a wonderful life we're living!
